06 Apr How To Keep Silver Shiny
The only way to keep silver shiny at home is to polish and shine it on a regular basis, i.e. ideally polished approximately every 3 to 6 weeks with silver polish.
In addition to this, the best advice is to keep silver that is not used on a regular basis wrapped up in cloth as when silver is exposed to air for extended periods of time silver will tarnish.
The reason for this is because when silver is exposed to air a chemical reaction occurs that creates something known as ‘Silver Sulfate’ which is basically that dark black stain that you see on silver as it tarnishes.
Silver is known to react with things such as wool, rubber bands, latex gloves, oils from your hands, ammonia, chlorinated water, air pollution, perfumes, hair sprays, and even foods such as onions, mayonnaise, salty foods, some types of salad dressings, and eggs can cause silver to tarnish.
Without action, silver will tarnish. The best precautions against this are to shine it with a quality silver polish on a regular basis, or keep unused silver, wrapped so it does not come into contact with air. This will slow the tarnishing process.
